Available positions in the Jacot Lab

The following positions are immediately available in the Jacot Lab:

Graduate Student Research Assistant

Postdoctoral Fellow:

One postdoctoral position is open in the lab of Jeffrey Jacot, Ph.D. for the study of Pediatric Cardiovascular Engineering. This laboratory, located in Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, is affiliated with both the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University. This unique environment fosters collaboration with congenital heart surgeons and bioengineers and allows for research with both clinical and laboratory aspects.

The position will concentrate on projects related to the following:

  1. An understanding of the mechanical and electrical influences on the development of human congenital heart defects through imaging, computational modeling and the evaluation of primary tissue samples and cells.
  2. Investigation into mechanotransductive and biophysical cues that direct the differentiation, development and maturation of cardiac tissue in cell culture and animal models.
  3. The design and evaluation of tissue engineered ventricular tissue for use in repair of congenital heart defects.

Relevant background on the influence of mechanical properties on cardiac cells can be found in the following reference, which is freely available in PubMed (www.pubmed.gov): Jacot JG, McCulloch AD & Omens JH. Control of the Functional Maturation of Neonatal Rat Cardiac Myocytes by Substrate Stiffness. Biophysical Journal. In Press (2008).

Qualified individuals should have a Ph.D. in Bioengineering or a related field and have experience in cell culture and mechanical characterization of materials.

Applicants should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae and contact information for three references to:
